Position Summary:
The Machinist sets up and operates a variety of machine tools to produce precision parts and instruments. They may also fabricate and modify parts to make or repair machine tools or maintain industrial machines, applying knowledge of mechanics, shop mathematics, metal properties, layout, and machining procedures.
Responsibilities:
  • Machine parts to specifications using machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, shapers or grinders
  • Calculate dimensions and tolerance using knowledge of mathematics and instruments such as micrometers and veneer calipers
  • Align and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, machines, and materials onto machines
  • Monitor the feed and speed of machines during the machining process
  • Measure, examine and test completed units to detect defects and ensure conformance to specifications, using precision instruments
  • Set controls to regulate machining, or enter commands to retrieve, input or edit computerized machine control media
  • Fabricate, erect, install, and maintain shop machinery
  • Perform preventative and predictive maintenance on shop equipment; Troubleshoot and repair as needed.
  • Write and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisory personnel.
Qualifications:
  • 2+ years of experience operating manual machines (i.e. mills, lathes, grinders) OR Diploma in Precision Machining or similar area of study
  • Experience with precision measuring instruments such as: calipers, ID and OD micrometers, depth gages, indicators, and scales.
  • Knowledge of tool holders, cutting tools, boring bars, fixtures, inserts, and other accessories used on various machines.
  • Ability to perform preventive maintenance according to published guidelines.
  • Ability to interpret technical manuals.
