GENERAL FUNCTION:

Senior financial decision maker with responsibility for ensuring the business activity within assigned LOBs is accounted for in accordance with the accounting policies and procedures approved by the Bancorp's Accounting Risk and Policy department. Primary responsibilities include maintaining an understanding of the existing and new product/transaction initiatives, the operating processes (both systemic and manual) used to service and account for these activities, and the external reporting requirements for these activities. Maintains internal responsibility for ensuring that the internal control environment associated with these areas meets internally developed standards as well as the requirements of FDICIA and Sarbanes-Oxley.

Division Controller has responsibility over multiple LOB accounting functions that could include: Capital Markets, Fifth Third Securities, Headquarters, Shared Services, Central Reconciliations, Consumer, Commercial (including Special Assets), Sarbanes-Oxley Compliance, and Enterprise Risk Management Program Execution.

Responsible and accountable for risk by openly exchanging ideas and opinions, elevating concerns, and personally following policies and procedures as defined. Accountable for always doing the right thing for customers and colleagues, and ensures that actions and behaviors drive a positive customer experience. While operating within the Bank's risk appetite, achieves results by consistently identifying, assessing, managing, monitoring, and reporting risks of all types.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist the Bancorp Controller in resolving critical technical accounting and operational accounting issues on a timely basis. These responsibilities include:
  • Development of alternative potential solutions to issues.
  • Participating in the final decision making process.
  • Preparation of memoranda supporting the issue resolution.
  • Communicating resolutions to both internal and external parties.
  • Implementing the resulting procedural revisions and developing controls to ensure the resolution is implemented and remains in place.
  • Establish and maintain relationship with External Auditor.
  • Prepare analysis and reports for and present findings to senior management.
  • Manage department resources and budget.
  • Ensure appropriate staffing in the department.
  • Develop and retain personnel with the requisite knowledge to account for products and services that are part of the business model. Also provide a foundation of skill sets to provide for advancement within the department or other departments/divisions within the company.
  • Recruit and train new personnel to maintain the appropriate capacity to support the accounting processes for the LOB's business activity.
  • Provide timely and clear communication about enterprise-wide business initiatives and how the initiative impacts the relevant LOB.
  • Identify challenging work assignments, mentoring and education programs to give employees exposure to proactive problem solving throughout the company.
  • Ensure ongoing and clear performance feedback to maintain proactive and positive work relationships with staff.
  • Establish and maintain work relationships with peers in LOB management, Operations, Information Technology, External Reporting, and Tax to ensure an effective and efficient internal control structure supports the LOB's product set.
  • Maintain a dialogue with LOB management about existing and new products, services, or transactions, and provide feedback about accounting and regulatory reporting impacts to those products.
  • Develop proactive processes for staff to understand and provide the necessary information about the LOB's business activities to the External Reporting and Tax departments.

Responsibilities may also include the following:

  • Ensure timely completion and ongoing compliance with Enterprise Risk Management programs that impact Accounting and other Finance areas, including Risk & Control Self-Assessments, Business Change Risk Assessments, Regulatory Change Management, and Self-Identified Issues Management.
  • Ensure timely completion of Sarbanes-Oxley Program requirements, including annual tollgate/walkthrough meetings with all LOB and supporting area process owners, annual assessments of key controls and remediation activities, annual certifications and rep letters, and quality control reviews.
  • Ensure timely completion of account reconciliations for all general ledger and internal processing accounts, including the appropriate aging of reconciliation items and the monitoring and reporting of aging thresholds versus established key risk indicators

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsible for providing employees timely, candid and constructive performance feedback; developing employees to their fullest potential and providing challenging opportunities that enhance employee career growth, developing the appropriate talent pool to ensure adequate bench strength and succession planning, and recognizing and rewarding employees for accomplishments.

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting; MBA preferred.
  • CPA required.
  • 10-12 years of accounting-related experience required; banking experience preferred.
  • Managerial/Supervisory experience required.
  • Working knowledge of GAAP required.
  • Proficient in Windows environment; Hyperion and other PC applications.
  • In-depth functional expertise and broad business knowledge.
