The Safety Manager manages distribution center safety programs to ensure a safe and accident-free work environment. Plans and/or delivers programs to train managers and employees in work site safety practices. Promotes safety by working with all departments to analyze current situations and recommend safety improvements. Analyzes accident data to identify trends and accident types that can be prevented.

Core Responsibilities
  • Builds a culture that integrates safety with daily operations; reduces frequency and severity of injuries, reduces costs and develops a more productive, effective and safe workforce that is in compliance with all applicable standards and regulations.

  • Serves as resource to management during the development and implementation of standard safety programs.

  • Regularly reviews status of safety process and programs.

  • Manages the health and safety regulatory programs to include; compliance counseling; strategy development; compliance and injury reduction programs; and best practice sharing.

  • Implementation of Smithfield Foods Employee Injury Prevention Management System (EIPMS)

  • Manages all aspects of safety and environmental compliance: permit application, renewal/appeals, compliance monitoring and reporting.

  • Establishes safety and environmental management systems in order to achieve ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 certifications.

  • Develops, evaluates, recommends and supports process and equipment changes and improvements to maximize safety and improve environmental impact of operations.

  • Educates personnel in safety and environmental impact of operating parameters to reduce emissions and waste streams.

  • Acts as the primary interface with local, state and federal regulatory commissions regarding safety and environmental practices.

  • Leads proactive efforts in air and environmental testing to maintain compliance to standard practices.

  • Establishes and ensures adherence to internal auditing schedules.

  • Tracks, reports, benchmarks and trends safety data; conducts root cause and other analysis to reduce incidents; establishes metrics and reports results to management weekly and monthly. Provides appropriate feedback and results to personnel.

  • Assists site management in developing, revising, and implementing a standardized leading indicator record and reporting system for the tracking, documenting, classification, and analysis of injuries and illnesses with validated information streams.

  • Analyze similarities, differences, trends, culture, and business drivers of the location in order to identify and eliminate or control factors that negatively influence safety.

  • Assists management team in developing annual fiscal year safety related goals.

  • Assists management with the development of capital budgets and spending programs to ensure compliance with applicable safety regulations.

  • Identifies "Safety Best Practices" and communicates for implementation at the location.

  • Reviews and update safety policies, procedures and training to meet all regulatory updates in a timely manner.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Occupational Safety and Health, physical science or related field and 5+ years of progressive health and safety or industrial safety related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience, required.

  • 2+ years of demonstrated experience in team management/development or project leadership is required.

  • Certified Safety Professional, (CSP) and OSHA Certification, preferred.

  • Experience developing, implementing and managing health & safety programs.

  • Advanced knowledge of health & safety, industrial hygiene, EPA and OSHA regulations.

  • Experience or training in OSHA standards and environmental regulations.

  • Experience in ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 certification process desirable.

  • Experience in performing detailed analysis of health & safety programs and development of corrective actions at a site levels.

  • Strong facilitation skills including, managing or directing safety committees, team building, objective setting, problem resolution and tracking results, and developing, preparing and presenting health & safety presentations to senior management.

  • The ability to communicate effectively, both written and verbally, with people of all levels of across the organization and collaborate with cross-functional teams to reach joint decisions.

  • Effective anticipation and analysis of root causes.

  • Ability to anticipate needs, forecast conditions, set goals/standards and measure results.

  • Good organization skills and the ability to manage several projects simultaneously.

  • The ability to excel in a team oriented, problem- solving environment.

  • Effectively adapt to changing situations, unexpected issues and varied job demands.

  • Ability to work well with others in fast paced, dynamic environment.

  • Ability to be respectful, approachable and team oriented while building strong working relationships and a positive work environment.

Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Provides leadership and guidance to employees in the Safety Department.

  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.

  • Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and assisting in providing appropriate resolutions.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

  • Office and facility setting. The plant environment will include wet or humid conditions (non-weather related), extreme cold and heat (non-weather related), working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, and chemicals.

  • Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but can be loud when in the production area.

  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision and ability to adjust focus.

  • Frequently required to sit, stand, walk; use hands to handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl and talk or hear.
