Company OverviewWhatever your interests or abilities, there's an important place for YOU in the work of the American Lung Association of Ohio. Although specific projects vary according to the time of the year and from region to region, there are always many opportunities to join the fight against lung disease. In 1901, about one in four Ohioans were affected in some way by Tuberculosis. At that time, Dr. Charles O. Probst, Director of the Ohio State Board of Health, called together a group of about 80 people to form a state-wide society for the purpose of eradicating TB. The organization founded over 100 years ago was the Ohio Society for the Prevention of Tuberculosis, and it grew very rapidly to over 300 members in the first few days. During the first decade of the organizations existence, the focus was on building hospitals and TB education, following on the findings of Dr. Edward Livingston Trudeau, who discovered that rest and recuperation in clean air, with good food and rest was an effective treatment of the disease. In many parts of Ohio, you may still see some buildings which had once been used as "Sanitariums," as the treatment facilities were known.
By the 1970's, and with the declining rates of TB, the organization turned its interest to other areas such as air pollution, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), Smoking Cessation and School Health Education. With its new mission, came a new name - the Ohio Lung Association. And since 1982, the American Lung Association of Ohio with the mission of the prevention and control of all lung diseases - because - when you can't breathe, nothing else matters. |
